About IP Lookup

Our IP Lookup tool allows you to quickly find information about your current IP address or any other IP address you want to check. This includes geolocation data, ISP information, and more.

What is an IP Address?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. IP addresses serve two main functions: identifying the host or network interface, and providing the location of the host in the network.

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4: The original IP address format, consisting of four sets of numbers separated by dots (e.g., 192.168.1.1). With only about 4.3 billion possible addresses, IPv4 addresses are becoming scarce.

IPv6: The newer IP address format, using eight groups of hexadecimal digits separated by colons (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334). IPv6 provides an almost unlimited number of addresses.

Public vs Private IP Addresses

Public IP: Assigned by your ISP and visible to the internet. This is what websites and online services see when you connect to them.

Private IP: Used within local networks (like your home or office network) and not visible to the internet. Common private IP ranges include 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, and 172.16.x.x to 172.31.x.x.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my IP address personal information?

Yes, your IP address is considered personal information in many jurisdictions as it can be used to approximately identify your location and internet service provider. However, it typically only provides city-level location accuracy, not your exact address.

Why would I need to look up an IP address?

There are many reasons to use an IP lookup tool: checking your own public IP, troubleshooting network issues, verifying VPN functionality, investigating suspicious activity, or determining the general location of a website server.

How accurate is IP geolocation?

IP geolocation is typically accurate to the city level, but not to specific addresses. The accuracy depends on the IP database being used and how frequently it's updated. Some IPs, particularly those of mobile devices or VPNs, may show locations that are far from the actual user.

Can I hide my IP address?

Yes, you can mask your real IP address by using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), proxy server, or the Tor network. These services route your traffic through different servers, showing websites the IP of the server rather than your actual IP.
